Watch for the choices behind the routine

Step Afrika!’s account of stepping highlights percussive movement, layered rhythms, call-and-response, synchronization, and vocal expression. Those elements give viewers useful questions to ask about a performance. Notice where a group builds a pattern, changes its timing, or uses contrast to make an idea clear. Do not assume that these observations match a particular competition’s judging system.

Read the actual rulebook

Age divisions, eligibility, time limits, music policies, judging, accessibility, and conduct rules can differ between organizers. Before registering, use that organizer’s current rules and written terms. A listing on a cultural website is not confirmation of team eligibility or ticket availability.

  • Ask for the current rubric, deadlines, fees, and cancellation policy.
  • Confirm supervision, transport, changing-space, and emergency arrangements.
  • Discuss credit and permissions for choreography, audio, costumes, and recordings.
  • Reflect on teamwork and creative decisions as well as a final score.
