Planning stepping and cultural learning for schools
Prepare a useful school brief before discussing a residency, workshop, or performance.
Define the learning question first
A focused plan connects cultural context with what students will observe, practice, discuss, and create. Begin with the learners’ needs, the time available, and a question that can be explored through both source material and movement. The Library of Congress recommends selecting primary sources for the learning objective and considering students’ access needs and the practical conditions of using each item.
Turn goals into a practical discovery brief
A school’s brief can make a later conversation more useful without presuming that a provider is available, approved, or aligned to a particular standard. Record your intended audience, learning goals, access requirements, available space, supervision arrangements, and procurement process. Ask a provider to confirm its actual staffing, schedule, deliverables, and price in writing.
- Separate proposed activities from confirmed deliverables.
- Identify how students can participate and reflect in different ways.
- Plan source credit, media consent, and any showcase audience.
- Verify applicable standards with the school before describing alignment.
